Great American Smokeout

Today is the 31st annual Great American Smokeout. This is the one day of the year that people quit smoking more than any other. This tradition was started by Lynn Smith who was publisher of the Monticello Times of Minnesota. The idea started catching on from state to state until 1977 when it was sponsored by the American Cancer Society and went nationwide. This event is held every third Thursday of November and there is also an international World No Smoking Day every year on May 31st.

These events really bring to attention the dangers of this deadly addiction. It is an addiction that it very difficult to beat, but like anything else in life, if you think positive and truly set this as a goal in your mind it is something you can and will conquer.

So, if you do smoke, please take today as an opportunity for a new start in your life. Join the estimated 46 million other people that will stop smoking today and even more importantly STICK WITH IT!
